Top Stories for March 28:

VIDEO OF THE DAY: CPAC audience cheers for…Trump impeachment?
Serial groper Matt Schlapp was dumbfounded when he tried to hype up the audience at the Klan rally masquerading as a political conference known as “CPAC” by asking if anyone was looking forward to impeachment hearings, expecting to hear a chorus of angry boos. Instead, he got CHEERS! “That was the wrong answer!” says Schlapp, awkwardly. We never thought we’d agree with the CPAC audience on anything, ever, but these are strange times indeed.

US House passes stopgap DHS funding bill after Republicans reject Senate deal
US House Republicans rejected a bipartisan Senate deal to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and instead passed their own funding measure late on Friday, extending a weeks-long budget standoff that has disrupted air travel. The stopgap bill, which proposes funding the DHS in full for eight weeks, passed by 213 to 203 votes after Republicans in the lower chamber refused to take up a Senate-passed deal that excluded money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the border patrol.
It essentially prolongs a standoff that has forced thousands of airport security staff to work without pay, even as the White House said Donald Trump ordered that the personnel finally be compensated. In a statement, the Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, said a funding measure “that locks in the status quo is dead on arrival in the Senate, and Republicans know it”.

MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson’s House majority is down to just ONE VOTE
Flip the House: We have a very real opportunity to flip the house and finally put some clamps on Donald Trump’s reign of terror and chaos this November, but it’s not going to be easy. Trump has made it clear that there’s nothing he won’t do to try to tilt the scales in his favor, so we need to win by a decisive enough majority that there’s no way he can pull any shenanigans. We’ve put together a donation page that will split any gifts between a group of Democratic candidates all locked in close, winnable House races, and every dollar might mean the difference between democracy or fascism. Will you chip in to help retake our country and stop Trump in his tracks?
Third No Kings protests to see millions across US push back on Trump administration
Millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday for the No Kings protests against the Trump administration. More than 3,000 events are planned in all 50 states, plus in 16 countries, according to a coalition of organizers that includes “anti-authoritarian” groups Indivisible and 50501, labor unions and other grassroots organizations. “I would expect March 28 to be the biggest protest in American history,” said Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible.
Saturday’s protest will be the third No Kings; the last one in October drew 7 million people nationwide. A “flagship” event will be held in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St Paul, in recognition of residents’ resistance to the surge of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that descended on the cities this winter. The St Paul rally will feature Senator Bernie Sanders, actor Jane Fonda and musicians Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez.

Hegseth reportedly cuts two Black men and two women from military promotion list
Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, is reportedly attempting to block the military promotion of four officers – two women and two Black men – to become one-star generals. The remaining promotion list includes about three dozen officers, most of whom are white men, though a few women and Black officers are still included, according to the New York Times.
Hegseth has asked army leaders, including Dan Driscoll, the secretary of the army, to remove the officers’ names, the report said. After Driscoll reportedly refused to do so, citing the officers’ decades-long, exemplary records, Hegseth removed the four officers’ names himself, though it is unclear whether he has the authority to do so.

Iranian hackers publish emails allegedly stolen from Kash Patel
Pro-Iran hackers published more than 300 emails and photos Friday from what appears to be a personal email account for FBI Director Kash Patel. The hacking group, called Handala, indicated on its website that the leak was in retaliation after the FBI and Justice Department seized several of its websites last week, accusing the group of “psychological operations” and saying it was a front for Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The hacked emails appear to have been sent from or to a personal Gmail account that is listed as belonging to Patel in at least one public government document.
