Top Stories for October 28:

Trump mocks his own followers at MAGA rally, tells them they can’t afford to eat at Mar-a-Lago
Donald Trump’s seething disdain for the very people who propelled him to the White House is well-documented, but no less jarring every time he flaunts it. Speaking at a campaign event in Corpus Christi, Texas, yesterday, the president openly mocked rally goers while dangling the fake $5,000 checks he will never send them.
Trump said the checks bribes would come with a caveat: the mythical money would have to be spent in the United States. He then suggested his cult followers take the money he will never send them and splurge on a vacation to — why not — Mar-a-Lago, before immediately backpedaling: “The problem is that for $5,000, the most you’ll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert. I’m not even sure you could buy that.” A moment later he snidely concluded, “No, don’t go there. That’s not a good place if you’re price conscious.”
We’ve heard some incredible closing arguments on the campaign trail, but “Ha, ha, ha. You can’t afford to dine with me, peasants!” just may take the cake.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Susan Collins’ tone-deaf attack ad belittling working-class Mainers blows up in her face
Brian Tyler Cohen sat down with Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson to discuss Susan Collins’ desperate, last-ditch attempt to paint him as a lowly, unqualified logger with a condescending attack ad that managed to belittle hard-working Mainers across the state, one week before they head to the polls. It would seem Our Lady of Perpetual Concern™ might have a new self-induced worry to contend with.

“Shouldn’t you be packing your bags?” Mike Johnson gets BRUTALLY heckled at campaign stop
Flip the House: The most ineffective and obsequious speaker of the House in American history was out doing something for the first time in weeks, taking time out of his constant vacations to rally the voters in New York’s 17th District, which Trump carried by 8+ points in 2024.
But he wasn’t too welcome there. “Shouldn’t you guys be packing your bags? History’s not gonna be kind to you. You’re enabling that lunatic in the White House. It’s not okay!” yelled a passerby out walking his dog. For this to be happening in Trump country is a REALLY bad sign for Speaker Johnson and his majority. Chip in now to help Johnson pack his bags and put the House back in Democratic hands!
Trump says war with Iran ends when he wants as costs top $47 billion
Exactly eight months into his “little excursion” in Iran, Donald Trump wants everyone to know that the war he promised would only last a few weeks and which we have also repeatedly won will now end whenever he feels like it, which, for the record, is not yet now. Also, we’re only out $47 billion, according to the Pentagon. Any questions?
GOP House candidate blames sexting scandal on “youthful indiscretions” — despite being 53 at the time
Who among us — at 53 years of age, with a wife and two adult children — hasn’t succumbed to the “indiscretions” of our youth and sent unsolicited dick pics to multiple women? Oh, and as Republican House hopeful Brent Taylor of Memphis, Tennessee, explained, the real victim in all this is his poor wife.
“I’m willing to acknowledge my past indiscretions, and really the frustrating part…is that my wife now has to relive something that we’ve already worked through together and moved on from,” Taylor complained.
Tsk, tsk. If only Brent, now 58, had thought of Mrs. Taylor before giving into his youthful indiscretions five whole years ago, all this unpleasantness could’ve been avoided.

Trump says “100%” of senators would vote to put Ted Cruz on the Supreme Court just to get him out of the Senate
There are very few things about Donald Trump we will miss when our long, national nightmare is over and he is finally cast aside, but his penchant for publicly belittling his most loyal sycophants is certainly near the top of the very short list.
Is Ted Cruz the most hated man in the US Senate? By most accounts, yes. Is Dear Leader petty enough to call the Texas senator out for it? Oh, you better believe it.
Thomas Massie vows to impeach Pete Hegseth in lame duck Congress following midterms
With less than three months left in office and no fucks left to give, outgoing Republican Rep. Thomas Massie is vowing to pick right back up where he left off before Speaker Johnson abruptly adjourned Congress earlier this fall: with articles of impeachment for Sec. of War Crimes Pete Hegseth.
Massie called the resolution a “week-one” issue for the upcoming lame-duck House session. “I give it better than a 50 percent chance of passing,” Massie said, noting that several Republicans will be more inclined to oust Trump’s DUI hire at the Pentagon once their reelection campaigns are over.
Massie’s resolution includes eight articles of impeachment, including allegations that Hegseth violated the 1973 War Powers Resolution in his prosecution of the Iran war and acted illegally in military campaigns in Venezuela, Yemen, the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Derriére, mon frére: Trump laments, “I made the mistake of studying his anatomy”
Keep talking about the butts, sir! It’s what voters struggling with the affordability crisis want to hear about most and definitely not making the situation weirder by the rally.
Trump says he’s ending restrictions on climate-warming methane from oil drilling
Speaking at a rally in Montana yesterday, Donald Trump told voters he was “terminating” rules put in place by Joe Biden aimed at cutting planet-warming emissions of methane from oil and gas drilling. As one of the world’s singular emitters of methane himself, a move like this by America’s gasbag-in-chief was always inevitable. All that hot air’s gotta go somewhere…
Trump’s five-day press secretary says she was blindsided by Sean Hannity’s “hostility”
Katie Zacharia, who lasted five whole days as Donald Trump’s press secretary earlier this month, told Newsmax teevee talker Rob Finnerty that she was wholly unprepared for the grilling she received at the hands of Fox News’ Sean Hannity, which ultimately led to her unceremonious dismissal after less than a week on the job. If we’re being honest, we here at Dose of Democracy were surprised, too. We thought Katie might last at least a couple of Scaramuccis before being kicked to the curb.
